Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service prosecuted Blackpool care home under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service successfully prosecuted a care home in Blackpool under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 on the basis that fire safety had been neglected and was of a “seriously poor standard”. The fine amounted to £5,000 per offence and the Company was charged with 7 breaches.

It identified some common mistakes which we see when visiting customer’s premises. We would suggest you spend a small amount of time checking to ensure that you too are not making these fundamental mistakes:

  • Exit routes were blocked or obstructed
  • Fire doors were wedged open
  • Missing smoke detectors
  • Fire extinguishers obstructed
  • Combustible materials (e.g. paper) obstructing exits and fire extinguishers
  • Electrical leads in escape route
  • Failure to ensure the fire risk assessment was reviewed regularly
  • Failure to provide a suitable fire warning system in the premises
  • Failure to ensure that employees were provided with adequate training
